Mental health and physical health are closely connected. Certain medical conditions, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic changes, and medication effects can influence mood, energy, concentration, sleep, anxiety, and overall well-being.
At Spring Azure Psychiatry & Wellness, laboratory testing may be recommended when clinically appropriate to help evaluate factors that may be contributing to psychiatric symptoms, establish baseline health information, or monitor the safety and effectiveness of certain psychiatric medications.
Located in Greenwood Village, Colorado, we provide individualized psychiatric care for patients throughout the Denver metro area.
Laboratory testing can provide important information that complements a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Depending on your symptoms, medical history, medications, and treatment plan, lab work may help:
Laboratory testing is not automatically necessary for every patient. Your recommended testing will depend on your individual clinical circumstances.
Depending on your symptoms and treatment needs, your psychiatric provider may consider laboratory testing such as:
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A CBC provides information about blood cells and may be useful when evaluating overall health or certain symptoms.
Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)
A CMP evaluates several markers related to kidney function, liver function, electrolytes, blood glucose, and other aspects of metabolic health.
Thyroid Testing
Thyroid dysfunction can sometimes contribute to symptoms that overlap with psychiatric conditions, including changes in mood, anxiety, energy, sleep, and concentration.
Vitamin B12 and Folate
Certain nutritional deficiencies can contribute to neurological or cognitive symptoms and may be considered when clinically indicated.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D testing may be considered when there are clinical reasons to evaluate vitamin D status.
Lipid Panel
Lipid testing may be appropriate for monitoring metabolic health, particularly when certain psychiatric medications are being considered or prescribed.
Hemoglobin A1C or Glucose Testing
Blood glucose monitoring may be recommended when clinically indicated, including as part of metabolic monitoring for certain psychiatric medications.
Other Testing When Clinically Appropriate
Additional laboratory testing may be recommended based on your symptoms, medical history, medications, family history, or specific clinical concerns.
Some psychiatric medications require or benefit from ongoing laboratory monitoring. For example, certain medications can affect metabolic health, liver function, blood counts, electrolytes, or other physiological systems.
When laboratory monitoring is indicated, Spring Azure Psychiatry & Wellness can incorporate appropriate testing into your overall medication management plan. Recommended monitoring is individualized based on the medication being prescribed and your personal health history.
For certain medications, monitoring may include metabolic testing such as glucose or A1C and lipid testing, while other medications may require different laboratory assessments.
Symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep, low mood, irritability, or anxiety can have multiple potential causes. A psychiatric evaluation considers the whole clinical picture rather than assuming that every symptom is caused by a mental health condition.
Laboratory testing, when appropriate, can provide additional information to help your provider determine whether further medical evaluation may be warranted or whether your treatment plan should be adjusted.
At Spring Azure Psychiatry & Wellness, we believe laboratory testing should have a clinical purpose. Testing recommendations are based on your individual symptoms, psychiatric and medical history, current medications, treatment goals, and other relevant factors.
Laboratory testing is one component of comprehensive psychiatric care and does not replace evaluation or treatment by your primary care provider or other medical specialists.
When results suggest a medical concern outside the scope of psychiatric care, coordination with your primary care provider or an appropriate medical specialist may be recommended.
Spring Azure Psychiatry & Wellness provides individualized psychiatric care and medication management in Greenwood Village, Colorado, with services available to patients throughout Denver, Aurora, Centennial, Parker, Littleton, and surrounding communities.
